What is a Gas Safety Check, or Gas Safety Certificate?

It is a legal requirement (under the ‘Gas Safety (installation and use) Regulations 1998) that a gas safety record (or certificate) is provided for all UK rented accommodation where gas appliances are in use or present in a property.

This means that all landlords have to have all their gas appliances checked and certified annually, and a copy of the gas safety record provided to their tenants.

Landlords Gas Safety Checks (or records, certificates) can only be completed by a gas engineer who is officially registered on the ‘Gas Safe Register’. This register replaced the previous well knowm ‘CORGI’ scheme in 2009.
